FAQ

WHAT’S A TYPE STYLE LOGO

Aristotle used the term logo to refer to “reasoned discourse”

or “the argument” in the field of rhetoric

Our word logo is derived from the word logotype which was a device used in early methods of movable type printing. Rather than representing a letter of the alphabet or number, the logotype was carved or cast in the form of a figure, image or abstract form that implied special meaning. It would be set in a type bed and printed with all the other characters and numbers.

Because of the limited literacy of early populations logos or symbols became important tools for tradesmen and merchants to identify their enterprises. Even today, many logos or pictographic symbols are far more readily recalled than the full names of the companies they represent.

Due to the limitations of printing technology, early logos were extremely simple, black and white forms. These limitations often lead to similarities in logos that caused confusion in the market place. Today modern printing and video provides the entrepreneur with virtually limitless design possibilities. Still many business prefer simple, type-based logos for their directness and ease of application.
